Buying Blu-rays in Europe

Europe is Region B territory. A disc bought in Berlin plays in Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Warsaw, and UK editions play on the continent too. The exceptions are imports: most American discs are Region A and need a region-free player. 4K UHD discs are region free by design, so any 4K edition plays anywhere.

Prices for the same edition differ per country, sometimes by half. StudioCanal sells the same restoration in France, Germany, and the UK under different covers, and the German pressing is often the cheapest. Within the EU there are no customs charges, so ordering across a border costs only shipping. From the UK to the EU, VAT and handling fees apply since Brexit.

Below: what the buying landscape looks like per country, and the shops worth a detour. occine keeps a directory of 36 independent stores across 26 European cities, each with its own page.

Germany

Germany is the largest disc market on the continent and the home of the mediabook, a disc bound into a small illustrated book. Labels like Turbine and Plaion Pictures serve collectors; chains like Media Markt and Saturn still carry discs in-store; Dussmann in Berlin stocks one of Europe's deepest film sections. German editions usually carry original audio, and many add English subtitles.

Berlin, Munich, Hamburg

France

France treats the disc as an object of cinephile culture. Carlotta and Potemkine publish reference editions of Tarkovsky, Melville, and Varda, and Fnac remains a genuine physical retailer with film shelves in every large city. The catch for foreign buyers: many French editions carry French subtitles only. Paris has the densest cluster of specialist shops in Europe.

Paris, Lyon

Netherlands

The Dutch market is small and online-first: Bol dominates mainstream titles, and dedicated disc shops are rare enough to count on one hand. Dutch pressings usually keep original audio with Dutch subtitles. Collectors here order from Germany and the UK as a matter of routine, since shipping from either arrives within days.

Amsterdam, The Hague

Belgium

Belgium splits its buying between French and Dutch retail channels, and Brussels rewards the second-hand hunter: the city's used-media shops carry deep DVD and Blu-ray sections at flat prices. Fnac operates here too. For new boutique editions, Belgians typically order from France, Germany, or the UK.

Brussels, Antwerp

Spain

Spain's disc scene concentrates in Barcelona and Madrid, with Fnac and El Corte Ingles as the mainstream anchors and a stubborn network of independents around them. Spanish editions of catalogue titles are often the cheapest Region B pressings in Europe, worth checking before ordering the UK equivalent.

Barcelona, Madrid

Italy

Italy gave the world giallo, and Italian genre cinema fills the catalogues of half the boutique labels on this page. Domestic retail is thinner: Feltrinelli and Mondadori stores carry mainstream discs, while collectors order the restored editions of their own national cinema from UK labels like Arrow and 88 Films.

Milan, Rome

Austria and Switzerland

Both markets ride on Germany's: the same editions, the same labels, often the same webshops. Vienna and Zurich keep a few specialist shops of their own. Swiss buyers pay import VAT on EU orders, so many order domestic or pick up discs while travelling.

Vienna, Zurich

Nordics

Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland buy mostly online, but the record-store tradition keeps discs on physical shelves: Norway's largest record chain stocks 4K and Blu-ray in central Oslo. Nordic editions carry original audio with local subtitles, and out-of-print Scandinavian cinema is a collecting niche of its own.

Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki

Poland and Central Europe

Poland is the growth market of European physical media: local distributors press Region B editions of both Hollywood and Polish classics at prices well under Western European level. Warsaw and Krakow have active second-hand scenes. Czech and Hungarian editions exist but check subtitle coverage per title.

Warsaw, Prague

United Kingdom and Ireland

The UK is Europe's boutique-label capital: Arrow, Eureka, Second Sight, Radiance, 88 Films, and the BFI all publish from there, and HMV survives on the high street. Since Brexit, EU buyers pay VAT and courier handling on UK orders, which adds a fixed cost that matters more on cheap discs than on box sets. Dublin's Irish Film Institute shop covers Irish cinema alongside arthouse titles.

London, Dublin
