Disc rot: real problem, or collector's ghost story?

Disc rot is real. It is also rarer than the forums suggest, and most documented cases trace back to specific manufacturing batches rather than to age alone. Both halves of that sentence matter if you are buying second hand.

What it actually is

An optical disc is a sandwich: a plastic substrate, a thin reflective layer that holds the data, and a protective coating. Disc rot is the chemical breakdown of that reflective layer. Oxygen reaches the metal, the layer oxidises, and the laser can no longer read what is underneath. The data does not fade gradually. It becomes unreadable in patches.

Moisture is the usual route in. So is heat, ultraviolet light, and any scratch deep enough to breach the protective coating and let air at the metal. Poor manufacturing does the rest: a coating applied too thin, or an adhesive that degrades, will fail long before a well-made disc does.

Is it a myth?

No, and there is a well-documented case to prove it. Warner Bros. acknowledged that a run of DVDs manufactured in the mid-2000s was failing, and offered to replace affected titles for owners who contacted them. That was a manufacturing defect in identifiable batches, not the entire format decaying on schedule.

That is the pattern. Rot clusters in particular pressings from particular plants in particular years. A disc that has survived twenty years in a living room is not on a countdown.

Well-made discs stored in reasonable conditions are expected to last decades. Estimates for DVD commonly run from 30 to 100 years. Nobody has had the format long enough to prove the upper end, which is worth remembering whenever you read a confident number.

Are Blu-rays more at risk?

The physics cut both ways. On a DVD the data layer sits about 0.6mm below the surface. On a Blu-ray it sits at roughly 0.1mm, far closer to the outside world, which is why Blu-ray needed a hard coating to survive normal handling at all. A shallower data layer means less plastic between the metal and the air.

Against that, Blu-ray is a newer format with better coatings and tighter manufacturing. In practice, the discs failing today are mostly older DVDs and CDs, not Blu-rays.

How to check a second-hand disc before you pay

Take the disc out of the case and hold it up to a bright light, playing side towards you.

  • Pinholes. Tiny points of light coming through the disc mean the reflective layer is already gone in those spots. This is the clearest sign, and it is fatal.
  • Discolouration. A bronze, coffee-coloured, or cloudy haze, usually starting at the outer edge. Healthy discs are uniform.
  • Edge damage. Look at the rim. Rot often begins where the layers meet the edge and works inward.
  • Deep scratches. Surface marks polish out. A scratch you can catch a fingernail in has reached the coating.

Buying by post removes all of that, so buy from sellers who describe condition honestly and accept returns. When the disc arrives, play the last chapter first. Data is written from the centre outward, so the end of the film sits at the rim, where rot starts. A disc that freezes in the final twenty minutes but plays the opening cleanly is the classic signature.

How to store a collection so this never comes up

Storage is the whole game, and it costs nothing.

  • Stand cases upright, like books. Stacking warps discs over years.
  • Keep them cool and dry. Humidity is the main enemy, which rules out cellars, attics, and garages.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight.
  • Hold discs by the edge and the centre hole, never on the playing surface.
  • Clean with a soft dry cloth, wiping from the centre straight out to the edge. Never in circles, which follows the data track and turns a small mark into a readable-length one.

A shelf in a normal room is fine. That is genuinely the standard: ordinary indoor conditions, upright, out of the sun.
